(LV) reconstructive surgery allows your surgeon to remove the damaged area of the heart that occurs after a heart attack and/or an aneurysm and return the left ventricle to a more normal shape. The goal is to improve heart failure and/or anginal (chest pain) symptoms and possibly improve the pumping ability of your heart.
Surgical Ventricular Restoration has been performed safely for many years. As in any open-heart surgery, patients are placed under general anesthesia and an incision is made in the chest wall and the chest cavity is opened to provide access to the heart. Patients are placed on a heart-lung machine. Your surgeon opens the left ventricle of the heart and removes the diseased tissue and returns the left ventricle to a more normal size. A fabric patch is then sewn into the ventricle to facilitate closure. You will stay in the hospital about 5-7 days depending on the course of your recovery. Your heart failure medications will be adjusted during the stay and you will continue to work closely with your cardiologist once discharged to maximize your heart function.
